Honolulu is the capital of the State of Hawaii. Honolulu means sheltered bay or 'place of shelter' in Hawaiian. The Honolulu population is around 375,000 and the Island of Oahu is around 900,000. The City and County of Honolulu encompasses all of the Island of Oahu, which is approximately 600 square miles.
Honolulu was first settled by the original Polynesian migrants to the archipelago. Oral histories and artifacts indicate that there was a settlement where Honolulu is around the 12th century. Captain William Brown of England was the first foreigner to sailinto what is now Honolulu Harbor in 1794. More foreign ships would follow making Honolulu a focal point for merchant ships going between North America and Asia.
Despite the turbulent history of the late 19th century and early 20th century, including overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, its annexation by the US, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Honolulu remains the capital of the Hawaiian Islands. An economic boom following statehood brought rapid growth to Honolulu. Modern air travel brings millions of visitors to the Islands each year.
